We love how these amazing blue quartzite counters turned out. Blue quartzite is an extremely versatile stone that is practical for both indoor and outdoor use thanks to its beauty and incredible durability. Quartzite is an extremely hard natural stone, created when sandstone is put through high heat and pressurization processes deep under the earth’s surface. Blue quartzite is a popular choice for those wanting more than just white and gray out of their natural stone.

Finish Options for your Granite Counters

Granite has been the number one natural stone choice among homeowners and builders for years. It’s beauty and durability are just some of the reasons for its popularity. When you think about granite counters, you likely envision a shiny, smooth stone. The polished look has been the most popular countertop finish choice for years, and is still the most utilized today. As homeowners have started looking for more unique options, changing up the appearance of granite with different finishing techniques has become more fashionable.

Polished

Polished granite countertops are probably what you think of when you think of granite. To achieve this look the stone is buffed to the highest possible level. The glossy, highly-reflective surface draws attention to the stone and perfectly displays the flecks, veining, and other desirable characteristics that make each slab one of a kind. A polished finish can also work as a stain repellant, making it a great option for a kitchen prep/work space.

Honed

If you love the look of granite but aren’t a fan of the super shiny style, a honed finish might be exactly what you’re looking for. A honed finish is still extremely smooth, but has a decidedly more matte appearance. Natural imperfections may be more noticeable with this finish, and it is definitely more susceptible to watermarks and fingerprints than the traditional polished look.

Leathered

Similar to the honed finish, leathered stone isn’t glossy or reflective. But this is where the similarities stop. Unlike polished and honed countertops, the leathering process results in a surface riddled with fissures and has a pitted feel, like a fine piece of leather. For this reason, leathering may not be the best option for a busy cook’s kitchen, as it can be slightly more difficult to truly deep clean. Because every stone is unique, the leathering will appear more pronounced on some slabs than others.

Flamed

A flamed finish is created by firing an intense heat at the granite, causing the stone to burst and change color. The process results in a rougher, textured finish with a faded, more natural seeming appearance. Flamed granite works best in damper areas, where slip-resistance is an important factor. Because of how well-suited this finish is in exterior, uncovered areas, flamed granite is extremely popular for outdoor kitchens.  Don’t feel confined by this if you really love this look,  it can be used functionally in almost any room in your home.

How to Choose the Right Granite Countertop Color

PMG kitchen with Calacatta
Calacatta Gold Countertops from Prestige Marble & Granite

The availability of numerous granite colors in the current American market can make choosing a granite countertop color  difficult, even overwhelming. Because any natural stone, including granite, is an investment and ultimately a long-lasting decision, it’s important to get it right the first time. While selecting a granite color for a countertop is is a personal thing, you’ll want to coordinate your granite with the cabinets, floor color, and other aspects of your kitchen to achieve your desired result. Here are some guidance and great tips to help you select the right granite for your countertops.

Cabinet Color

We always encourage our customers to bring a cabinet sample when they visit our show room to select their granite. Even if that means temporarily removing a door, it’s well worth it. The ideal cabinet and granite coordination is a granite that contrasts with the cabinets, but with the natural speckles or veins having hues of the cabinet color. If you have two-tone cabinetry, selecting a suitable granite that goes well with the two different colors can pose a challenge. The basic principle is to select a granite that has hues of the both colors.

Other Kitchen Colors

Making a good selection for countertops requires an eye for detail.  In addition to cabinet samples, you will want to bring samples of wall paint, flooring and kitchen appliances to the showroom. (If samples aren’t available, take pictures in good, natural lighting.) Place your  samples on or around the granite to get a good idea of what different  color combinations look like.

Kitchen Lighting

Don’t forget the kitchen’s lighting when choosing granite colors! If your kitchen has little or no natural light, select granite that has a significant amount of white or gold, or lots of light-reflecting crystals. Dark colors like deep blue and black look best in areas that receive substantial light. Think about using layers of lighting and including Track and pendant lighting, as well as under-cabinet lighting to enhance the beauty of the stone. Kitchen Size

Be sure to consider the size of your kitchen when choosing granite colors. In general, smaller kitchens will look larger with lighter colored countertops. But dark-colored granite with lots of lighter colored veins can offer a stunningly beautiful result in small kitchens, too. This where you have to really pay attention to your lighting.

Can’t Decide?

At the end of the day, if you’re torn between two granite colors, consider using both!  Selecting a lighter color for an island and a darker tone for the surrounding cabinets creates a beautiful contrast. Your kitchen will pop even more with contrasting granite colors that perfectly compliment cabinetry that’s also in two different colors.
