Tips For Creating The Perfect Two Tone Kitchen

We are currently finding ourselves obsessed with the two-tone kitchen cabinet trend that is showing up all over the place these days. Kitchens have been at the forefront of home design for awhile now and homeowners looking for new and different ways to make a statement in their kitchens are really gravitating to this cool look. And we are here for it. If this is a style you’re thinking about going for, read on for ideas about how to make it work for you and your kitchen.

Pick A Focal Point

There are multiple ways to use the two-tone trend to create a focal point in your kitchen.

The purple cabinets in this minimalistic kitchen instantly draw your eye with this unexpected jewel tone. Using the same cabinets, in two different colors with the same hardware, is a great way to keep the continuity throughout your space. We love the open wood shelving above that reinforces the notion of this wall being the focal point.cabinets-purplePhoto:JNordWolfe
This kitchen makes the island the focal point by doing it in opposite colors from the rest of the kitchen, which is a common design theme. This space takes it to the next level with the black and white and contrasting countertops, in addition to the contrasting cabinetry. We love how the glass drawer pulls on the island are so distinctly different from the industrial rustic feel of the rest of the kitchen hardware.two-tone-kitchen-cabinets-black-and-white-picture.jpgPhoto: Trendir
As if this gorgeous distressed icy blue island wouldn’t stand out enough against the flat black of the surrounding cabinetry, they amazing pendant light fixtures further illuminate this beautiful focal point island.

Go Light On Top, Darker On Bottom

Whether you’re creating a focal point or keeping the design consistent throughout the cabinetry, you will want to keep the darker tone on the bottom. This will have the effect of grounding the space, as well as making it appear larger by naturally drawing the eye upward.

One way to go out about this is to use a bright pop of fun color with white on top. This look manages to feel both classic and fresh, especially with the gorgeous white countertops and white tile backsplash.cabinets-greenPhoto: Tradewinds General Contracting
If you prefer neutral tones to bold hues, you can still absolutely make this look work for you. The gold hardware on all of the cabinet fronts tie the two disparate cabinet styles together and the contrasting marble and wood countertops add a very natural, organic feeling to the space.

We love how luxurious these creamy colors make this kitchen feel. The subtle color difference between the top and bottom cabinets creates an ombre-like effect that is simultaneously upscale and inviting.3316e248c6c10360873e26a3505d1030Photo: Ugly Duckling House

Mix Materials, Not Just Colors

The two tone trend isn’t just about having different color cabinets. Thoughtfully pairing different wood, natural stone countertops, and textures is a great way to organically achieve this style in your home.

This kitchen uses a tile backsplash to tie together white and wood cabinetry with both wooden and a dark stone countertop. The backsplash that incorporates all of those colors makes what would otherwise be really disparate elements into a really cohesive look.two-tone-kitchen-cabinets-16Photo: Design First Interiors
This mix of wood and white cabinetry feels super sleek and modern with the thick marble waterfall countertops.

Don’t Forget Coordinating Elements

These are the details that will make your two tone kitchen feel like a cohesive space, not just a random mishmash of colors and materials.

This cheery kitchen uses stainless steel and industrial style silver handles as coordinating elements. The fact that the cabinet/drawer pulls are all the exact same, varying only in size, creates a sense of unifying calm with the appliances, stainless hood, and matching light fixture. This kitchen uses gold fixtures and accents as a uniting theme. Even the stove has gold accents, and the marble backsplash contains small brown and gold colored flecks. Gold has been coming back for kitchens this year, and we don’t think the trend is going away anytime soon.27880783_190592884867344_5380731777138556928_nPhoto: Real Simple

Fabulous Bathroom Vanities

When granite or marble counters are mentioned, most people instantly think about the kitchen. And we do understand, but we also know how beautiful and functional granite and marble each are as bathroom counters. Here are some amazing bathroom vanities we are loving right now.

This 3.5″ slab of Calacatta Gold Marble counter was the perfect choice to complement this luxurious nature-inspired space. This feels more like an expensive retreat than it does someone’s master bath and the only issue is how difficult it must be to leave this amazing bathroom.Contemporary-Bathrooms-Mountain-Retreats-02-1-KindesignPhoto: OneKinDesign
This gorgeous white and blue bathroom feels totally serene. The white marble with light gray veining is a beautiful match with the blue-gray hued walls. This master bath is a great example of how a room can simultaneously feel modern and classic.

This master bathroom fits perfectly in the rustic Montana retreat it’s located in.  The natural stone is the same on the vanity, running between the blue tiles on the floor, and in the standup shower providing a real sense of continuity.contemporary-bathrooms-mountain-retreats-09-1-kindesign.jpgPhoto: OneKinDesign
How fabulous is this white marble waterfall style double vanity? We are drooling over how chic the open shelving looks with the low-edged open glass containers. This master bath is the perfect mix of rustic and contemporary design.  We love how all the different natural stone textures blend together so wonderfully and are really set off by the dark wood cabinets, giving the entire space a real sense of balance without feeling overly effeminate.

We love this freestanding bathroom vanity with dual sinks on opposite sides. This is a great option for a smaller bathroom, allowing homeowners to maximize functional counter space.

This bathroom is proof you don’t need a huge space to have an amazing bathroom with a gorgeous vanity. The thick slab makes a real statement in a smaller bathroom and makes the need for a lot of extra decor minimal.55c151feb28acca368628935-w1000_h1000Photo: Domino
Counter space will never be an issue in this amazing bathroom with a floating vanity that runs the entire length of one wall. We really love the mirror above, especially because no matter what direction you’re facing in this space, you get to enjoy the gorgeous views provided by the wall of floor-to-ceiling windows.

Mixed Material Countertops

We love the mixed materials trend that is so hot in kitchen design right now. There are almost innumerable ways to incorporate this look into your home, one of our favorites is by combining multiple materials for your countertops. While we at Prestige will always be partial to natural stone, we get that sometimes people want to mix it up a bit. Here are some of the dual material kitchen countertops inspiring us right now.

The idea of using a piece of wood to connect two separate pieces of stone seems so simple, but it makes a big impact. This is a really understated way to experiment with a mixed materials countertop in a truly unique way.d1a8d28d768818fafdfdfc692987ad7cPhoto: Pinterest
We love the combination of wood and limestone on this kitchen island. There are so many different textures and finishes in this space, keeping the clutter to a minimum allows the eye to focus on the individual elements without becoming overwhelmed. 58471909Photo: Chicago Tribune
This combination of light stone and dark wood work beautifully in this modern kitchen with its neutral colors. Not only is the shape of this island unique, the stark contrast in the light stone and dark wood make this kitchen centerpiece a true showstopper. And how fabulous is that sink?modern-kitchenPhoto: Houzz
This kitchen island was created by topping a pair of architect’s drafting tables with glass. It adds a modern twist to this otherwise traditional kitchen. The glass beautifully complements the classic Carrara marble in a really unexpected way.glassPhoto: House Beautiful
We love the yin and yang vibe of this stark white stone next to the dark wood of the upper level bar. This two tone kitchen look has been gaining in popularity in the last couple years and we don’t predict the trend will be going away any time soon.ca7c5a8c64543ddc98c4c93f7908dd2cPhoto: Houzz
We love how the wood centerpiece of this large stone topped island not only breaks up the space visually, it also defines the different areas by function. We love how the pops of blue in the room really pull that color out of the predominately gray granite.1400989063342Photo: HGTV
This stainless steel island lends an industrial feeling to this contemporary white kitchen with it’s perimeter stone countertops. Making Your House a Happier Place

the-everygirl-kelli-lamb-home-tour-46-1.jpgPhoto: The Every Girl

The world can be a stressful place. Your home should not be. It should be your sanctuary, where you go to relax, and escape the chaos of it all. Whether you’re trying to become happier in general, or just looking for different ways to elevate your already good mood, the space you spend such important time in can easily reflect that. After all, your house plays an integral part in how you feel on a daily basis.

 Display Your Memories

This is an easy one. Remembering positive times and experiences makes us happy. It’s that simple. Put up cherished pictures, show off travel souvenirs, it’s all about what represents a happy time for you and your family.

This is a fun way to organize and remember your travels.img_2424.jpgPhoto: Mr Perkins ICT
A photo collage is a great way to take pictures off your phone and social media and put them up in your home. This heart shape is fun, but really your options are limitless.originalPhoto: We heart it
A coffee table with a glass top and hollowed out area underneath is a great place to show off tchotchkes and mementos. This is an especially good option for things you don’t want regularly handled. Play with Color

There are entire studies devoted to the principle that colors can positively or negatively affect our mood. Some colors are scientifically proven to make us happy. Bold isn’t always better though, this is another aspect of design where your options are limited only by your preferences. If you want to go big you can do an entire room in a happy color. You can easily incorporate pops of color into a space to create impact as well.

Yellow comes up in every search as the happiest of colors. Yellow makes us think of sunshine and warmth and is innately cheery. When choosing your shade it’s important to know that it does reflect light better than other colors. This means you’ll want to consider the brightness level you choose, to ensure you continue to love the color for a long time.333f47a9d147428b8d829e8fb3c3058a-yellow-kitchen-cabinets-open-cabinets.jpgPhoto: Pinterest
Red is another color that can get very intense, very quickly.  There are so many options with red, from the almost pinks to the more orange shades. You can make red work in almost any space you want it to. Decorating around red is important; it’s easy to get Christmasy or overly patriotic. If that’s what you’re going for, great! But if not, it’s something to consider.eclectic-living-roomPhoto: Houzz
Blue is proven to evoke feelings of  calm and relaxing. While it makes some think of sadness, blue is easily one of the most popular colors across all demographics. And with so many shades it’s easy to find one to fit your personal style.296cc05c9d8647dd3c6283d6552759d9Photo: Decor Me Happy

Lighting is Key

Any interior designer will tell you that lighting is key when it comes to setting the mood in any space. And for creating good vibes in your home, nothing works better than natural light. Let in the sunshine! It’s a proven fact that time spent in the sun automatically triggers good feelings.  And for spaces where light is scarce, or for winter months, go for bulbs that mimic natural light as closely as possible. And try to avoid fluorescent lighting; it’s been shown to raise anxiety levels.

Large windows let in an incredible amount of light and the paint color mimics the tropical tableau featured so prominently. The cabinet lighting helps beautifully display kitchen collectibles, and the recessed lighting is a nice touch for when its dark outside. iStock_000011988451_SmallPhoto: Crowd Build
Candles create an automatic feeling of warmth and coziness, which increases one’s sense of security. These are all important elements to feeling happy and at ease in your home.tumblr_mx54xrOGf91r7b56jo1_500Photo: Rebloggy

Make Your Bed

Turns out mom was right about this one. Making your bed is a three minute task that has been proven to positively impact one’s mood for the rest of the day. But it’s not just making your bed. Studies have shown that taking a couple of minutes in each room to bring them to “readiness” lowers stress levels. And lower stress levels equals a happier existence.
