Bathroom Trends for 2019

One of our favorite parts of the holiday season is that it’s the time of year design gurus start predicting what’s going to be all the rage next season. If you’re planning on building, remodeling, or maybe just want to do a little sprucing up, here are some ideas to keep in mind.

Spa Inspired Designs

Bathrooms in 2019 are all about the experience, the notion of the bathroom as a purely utilitarian space is over. People’s homes are their sanctuaries and the bathroom is where you go to relax and unwind alone after your day. Drawing inspiration from the pinnacle of relaxation only makes sense.

The use of natural materials is a major way to create the feeling of serenity key to this look, this bathroom achieves this beautifully with the wood wall and coordinating bench. The light fixture adds a touch of whimsy that keeps the space from feeling too serious.contemporary-master-bath-the-warmth-of-natural-wood-balances-the-stark-elegance-of-the-freestanding-tub-1.jpegPhoto: Besch Design
This bathroom takes the spa design to the next level with it’s open concept rainfall shower placed in front of a large window looking out into a tropical garden. The modern floating sink opposite a floating bench make going to an actual spa almost unnecessary.Modern-Natural-Bath-Fittings-Accessories-ShowerPhoto: Residence Style

Open Concept Bathrooms

Not for the faint of heart, open concept bathrooms have been growing in popularity in recent years and seemed poised to take off in 2019. Many open concept bathrooms draw very strongly on spa inspired design, though this isn’t always the case.

This freestanding partition, doubling as the a vanity area with sinks and countertops, allows for a feeling of privacy while still creating that open concept feeling that comes from free flowing light and not having doors.SquareRooms-Open-Concept-Bathroom-Fixed-Divider.pngPhoto: Square Rooms
Using glass walls is another popular way of incorporating the feeling of open concept design into your bathroom.open-concept-master-suite-bedroom-contemporary-with-open-bath-rectangular-decorative-pillowsPhoto: Chic Home Life

Place A Vanity In Front Of A Window

One fresh design idea for 2019 is to place your vanity in front of a window. Especially if you have a wonderful view, you naturally want to take advantage, and everyone knows natural light is the optimal choice if you have it. There are so many ways to place or suspend a mirror, we don’t think this trend will be going anywhere anytime soon.

This contemporary bathroom take the look to the next level by placing a double vanity in front of a glass wall. The pole mounted mirrors parallel the lines of the glass framing and modern open shelving continues the aesthetic on the vanity.bathroom-vanity-mirrors-hanging-in-front-of-windowsPhoto: DecorPad
This is an especially good idea in a smaller bathroom, where lighting and window space can be limited. This round mirror, suspended from a rope and pulley give off a fun, rustic nautical vibe that makes this small piece a statement.0a73a9f9759b78b0a0f6c927367ea53b.jpgPhoto: Pinterest

Smart Bathrooms

Technology has taken over practically every aspect of our lives, and it should come as no surprise that our bathrooms haven’t been left out of the revolution. From smart showers where you can control water pressure and temperature on demand, to mirrors that are integrative media systems, the future is now and it is in our bathrooms.

Statement Walls

Whether with a bright print or piece of art, designers and homeowners are making walls, and not additional accessories, the focal point of the bathroom in 2019.

If you don’t want to commit to a more permanent option, using a large or dramatic piece of art as a focal point in your bathroom is also a very 2019 design choice. BN-RB835_1208BA_M_20161205141323Photo: Wall Street Journal

Art Deco Is Back

Art Deco is a style of design and architecture that emerged from France after WWI. Popular throughout the 1920s and 30s, Art Deco is defined by bold geometric patterns, beautiful craftsmanship, and ornately lavish details. While art deco isn’t for everyone, if you’re looking to inject a little high style or drama into your space, this may be exactly the aesthetic you’re looking for.

Fabulous Bathroom Vanities

When granite or marble counters are mentioned, most people instantly think about the kitchen. And we do understand, but we also know how beautiful and functional granite and marble each are as bathroom counters. Here are some amazing bathroom vanities we are loving right now.

This 3.5″ slab of Calacatta Gold Marble counter was the perfect choice to complement this luxurious nature-inspired space. This feels more like an expensive retreat than it does someone’s master bath and the only issue is how difficult it must be to leave this amazing bathroom.Contemporary-Bathrooms-Mountain-Retreats-02-1-KindesignPhoto: OneKinDesign
This gorgeous white and blue bathroom feels totally serene. The white marble with light gray veining is a beautiful match with the blue-gray hued walls. This master bath is a great example of how a room can simultaneously feel modern and classic.

This master bathroom fits perfectly in the rustic Montana retreat it’s located in.  The natural stone is the same on the vanity, running between the blue tiles on the floor, and in the standup shower providing a real sense of continuity.contemporary-bathrooms-mountain-retreats-09-1-kindesign.jpgPhoto: OneKinDesign
How fabulous is this white marble waterfall style double vanity? We are drooling over how chic the open shelving looks with the low-edged open glass containers. This storage option is super stylish and keeps everything beautifully organized.design-ideas-wonderful-white-bathroom-decoration-using-white-marble-bathroom-vanity-including-marble-floor-tiles-and-oval-white-free-stand-bathtub-heavenly-interior-design-using-marble-fPhoto: Gogoigood
This master bath is the perfect mix of rustic and contemporary design.  We love how all the different natural stone textures blend together so wonderfully and are really set off by the dark wood cabinets, giving the entire space a real sense of balance without feeling overly effeminate.

We love this freestanding bathroom vanity with dual sinks on opposite sides. This is a great option for a smaller bathroom, allowing homeowners to maximize functional counter space.

This bathroom is proof you don’t need a huge space to have an amazing bathroom with a gorgeous vanity. The thick slab makes a real statement in a smaller bathroom and makes the need for a lot of extra decor minimal.55c151feb28acca368628935-w1000_h1000Photo: Domino
Counter space will never be an issue in this amazing bathroom with a floating vanity that runs the entire length of one wall. We really love the mirror above, especially because no matter what direction you’re facing in this space, you get to enjoy the gorgeous views provided by the wall of floor-to-ceiling windows.

Mistakes to Avoid When Remodeling Your Bathroom

Whether you’re headed for a simple refresh or full-on makeover, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by a bathroom remodel. While remodeling your home is an exciting and creative process, the responsibility to make educated decisions can cause anxiety and leave many people terrified of making the wrong decisions. How can you make sure to get the right design for your lifestyle, stay within your budget, and maximize the return on your investment? Get off on the right foot with this list of what not to do.

Being Afraid to Commit
There’s something that feels so permanent about bathroom selections that leaves many people paralyzed when it comes to making decisions. While it’s true you can’t switch up tiles like you would throw pillows, nothing is really forever. Your bathroom could be one of the most important rooms in the house— potentially a spa, a retreat, a place for a moment’s peace and quiet. Let your creativity flow and go for the colors, patterns and fixtures that add character to the space and make you happy.

Overlooking the Floor
Often called the “fifth wall,” floors are your opportunity to pack an extra decorative punch. A feature floor can make all the difference in a hum drum bathroom design and one that truly stands out as exceptionally designed.

Making Lighting an Afterthought
Plan your lighting scheme from the beginning. Layered lighting (task, mood and accent) in your bathroom will create a richer environment.

Neglecting to Integrate the Design Style
Many homeowners treat the space as though it were a completely separate entity from the rest of the house, in terms of both the architecture and the style. Don’t forget to carry the look and feel of your other rooms into your new bathroom design.

Choosing the Wrong Vanity Top
The range of bathroom countertop material options can be somewhat overwhelming, but choosing the right material for your bath space is an important aspect of bathroom design. The style, durability and cost of your chosen vanity top material are all key considerations. In addition to durability and price, consider the look of a vanity top, since this highly visible surface contributes greatly to the room’s overall style. When selecting materials, also consider aspects like size, location, material, height, storage and the plumbing.

Cutting Costs on Installation
Cutting costs here will inevitably have an impact in the longer term. Spending more on installation should be a high priority as the single thing most likely to ruin a bathroom design is how it’s fitted.

Neglecting Finishing Touches and Accessories
Don’t forget to set aside a small portion of your remodeling budget for the accessories and finishing touches. It’s important to think about doors and door handles, lighting, window seals, blinds and shutters, and paint, as well as soap dishes, toothbrush holders, vessels and vases. These details can sometimes be overlooked, but they make a huge difference.

For bathroom countertops, marble and granite remain the premier choices among the varieties of natural stone, due to their dramatic beauty and seemingly endless variety of colors and patterns. Prestige Marble & Granite offers the largest selection of the highest quality, rare and exotic natural stones available in Middle Tennessee – we would love for you stop by the Prestige Marble & Granite showroom and browse any time.
