Color forecasters at the Pantone Color Institute have declared “Ultra Violet” as 2018’s color of the year. Pantone explains that the dramatic purple hue is symbolic of the visionary way of thinking that will carry us into the future:
Pantone, owned by Washington, D.C.-based Danaher Corp., has a system that helps manufacturers define color precisely. The Pantone Color Institute provides color trend forecasting, brand color development supported by brand color stories, and product palette development.
Every year, Pantone’s team around the world spends a good chunk of the year studying trends in fashion, consumer products, social media and technology. It looks for influences that best describe the current mood of society and picks a color to reflect those elements. Pantone tips off some marketing partners in advance, so consumers will soon see a variety of products, such as Sephora cosmetics, KitchenAid stand mixers, Keurig coffee makers, and even cars, in the new hue.
While the shade is definitely an intense one, this doesn’t make it difficult to incorporate it into your current design scheme.
A little bit of Ultra Violet can go a long way, making it the perfect pop of color in an otherwise monotone room.

When pairing this vibrant purple with other colors, choosing other equally bold hues will make the biggest impact. The golden yellow used below doesn’t compete with the Ultra Violet, but complements it beautifully, and makes both more interesting.

If you already have a bold color scheme, Ultra Violet is a great way to add a touch of fun and lightness to a space. This eye-catching rug really anchors this room. The pillows and art carry the purple color up, really tying together the beautifully eclectic elements that make this space so special.

For more inspiration, Pantone created eight different color palettes to help you bring Ultra Violet into your personal design aesthetic. All color bases are covered; brights, deeper hues, pastels, mid-tones, and metallics. With Ultra Violet as a versatile trans-seasonal and gender-neutral anchor in every palette, each conveys its own distinctive feeling and mood. These palettes can easily cross over into fashion and beauty applications as well.
